We could theoretically maintain our regulations around dairy products, and lower tariffs. This would prevent importers from flooding the market with the so called 'unhealthy' stuff.
But then again, why not let the consumer choose? We have our food standards, yes, but the tariffs are just driving up prices for all Canadians, and the only people winning are the dairy cartels.
Which I suppose is the Canadian way!

Here's a pretty good video on the milk industry. I don't think it's a perfect system by any means, but I think its a necessary one.

It's really no different than the US putting tariffs on our lumber and steel to remain competitive. Wanting completely free trade would be like wanting unfettered capitalism, there would be one winner and a ton of losers. In the case of milk, there's no way we could compete with a less regulated market, much larger market and would end up completely reliant on the US for all dairy production. As we can see, relying completely on the US is not a good idea.
Isn't this what we're also lobbying for on the oil front? The government getting their #### together so we can get our oil to market? Without them buying up TMX we wouldn't even have that.
