There is no excuse for screwing up "they're" though, at least not in my mind. It's a contraction. If you can replace the word you're using with they are, then you should use they're.

Ah but I'll do even worse ones than that. For instance I'll mis-use "are" instead of "our" or vice verca because the sounds are the same. There's other even stranger examples but I can't recall any right now. But its not a case of not knowing the different meanings of each word - its a disconnect between the thought in your head and what one's fingers type.
I'm not doing a very good job of explaining it.
