The more I look at a potential Cozens trade - to anyone, not just Calgary - the more I think it would be more likely to happen in the offseason. If Buffalo wants NHLers in a hockey trade, they are limiting their list of teams because most playoff teams will not want to subtract from their roster and would prefer to trades futures instead. That could change in the offseason. Also, the cap is going up in the summer so lots of teams will have cap space to take on his contract by then but right now, lots of teams would not have room for Cozens’ $7.5 million AAV.
It could still happen before the TDL but I think it just makes more sense in the offseason. Even with Calgary - they might not be willing to trade Andersson/Kadri/etc. to other teams in a 3-way trade with Buffalo right now, but they might consider it potentially in the offseason when they won’t have to worry about disrupting team chemistry in the middle of a playoff hunt.
