Everyone who mattered took him seriously. And it is the people who took him seriously that were able to avoid it. Once he signed the executive order, it was happening. Even from a pure ego standpoint, he’s not going to do that, get zero reaction from Canada and Mexico, and just cancel it on his own accord two days later (even despite the self inflicted damage).
This naive idea of “well I thought it was all a lark and it didn’t happen so it must have been a lark” just totally ignores what we’ve very clearly just seen play out. And I’m just left wondering how and why anyone but true MAGAs (because whatever) can ignore the facts and actually believe that.

You can take it seriously without panicking. IMO a lot of sensible people see this as a negotiating tactic and public posturing. Not dissimilar to the last time the US threatened Canada and more severely Mexico with tariffs.
Holding that view doesn't mean you think it's a "lark", those are your words.
