If you want to use the word dumb, dumb would be ignoring what is going on with the team, and tearing it down anyway. Dumb is blindly sticking to the old plan when the environment has completely changed and that plan is no longer applicable.
Take a look at the team. This isn't a team with a core of players between 26-32, who simply aren't good enough (a mushy middle core), that core (Lindholm, Toffoli, Mangiapane, Hanifin, Zadorov) have already been traded.
This is a team that has a few legacy older players (Kadri, Backlund, Coleman, Huberdeau) and a bunch of young players - the next core. There are NINE guys in the lineup that are 25 or younger. And the Flames have been building the prospect pool at a better rate than almost every other team, over the last couple years. And they will continue to do so. This is a team that is being rebuilt right in front of our eyes, but some people refuse to look.
Making the playoffs isn't 'dumb'. It gives Zary and Coronato and Frost and Farabee and Klapka and Bahl and Wolf playoff experience. It makes them better players. Playing games that matter, and playing playoff games, are good for development.
Drafting is important, and the more picks the better. But development is also important - maybe MORE important.
You should consider opening your eyes and enjoying what's happening - it's actually pretty terrific!
