FWIW, Tim Horton's was "repatriated" back into Canada at a corporate level as it is owned by the Toronto based Restaurant Brands Inc. (RBI), although 3G, a Brazilian company owns a large stake in it as well. The same corporation that also now owns Burger King and Popeye's Chicken. So if Tim Horton's is Canadian, are those two also considered Canadian? Ultimately, they are all owned by shareholders and I bet most of them are American anyway. But then again, I don't think it matters.

If a company is American owned, but is dedicated to using Canadian sourced products, I would support it over a Canadian company that uses American products. But that is where it gets tricky, because how do you even find out that information?
I find it gets even more tricky with some restaurants like Tim's because the stores are franchises and the people that own the stores are mostly local people from your neighborhood. Yes, they pay royalties back to head office but a bunch of the money stays in the local community and wages to go local people (TFW or not.)
