Like I said, the names become what you make of them eventually. Something like the Leafs I think is a good example of what I'm saying where maybe it seems dumb, but for some reason is classic, even if it was named that way today. The same way calling the Seattle team the Metropolitans maybe have seemed lame compared to GIGANTIC OCTOPUS! but Mets has a classic sports feel despite being kind of a stupid name. Or tying something to the city like the music scene or the aeronautic history.

The teams you mentioned I think actually fall into an interesting set of categories where a combination of name, jersey and logo can determine the feeling of longevity (or not). The Blue Jackets I think have a great name, but took way took long to get to the actual Civil War imagery and away from weird 2000's bug. If their team had had any success they'd probably fit into a better category. The Devil's name is pretty lame, but a good jersey and logo (despite their logo being simple and kinda crappy, it works) along with some stints of success have given them a good historical standing. The Ducks ended up changing their name away from what would be some surely rooted in the 90s forever to something a little more palatable, but then changed their jersey from what was a great hit. They're just now getting to a place where they properly own it. The Preds are the same. If their name wasn't super lame 2000's, their strong teams and revamp style to reflect their city more would probably have them in a more classic category. The Wild in a similar boat minus any good teams.

Anyways, it's all subjective. I just think when coming up with these things it's good to take a step back and just think ahead to 30-40 years from now. Looks at some old newspaper headlines of classic team match ups. And maybe reconsider whether or not Kraken or Yeti is a good name for your sports team.
