To me this is the argument against ‘models’ to follow.
GM’s can only control so much. Most try and out forward a team that will be competitive year after year. And must of those teams, at some point, fall well short, or above, expectations. Trying to emulate another teams build can probably only serve as a loose guideline.
You can plan all you want, but, there are many variables that can impact your teams trajectory.
I’m sure the Flames wanted to cultivate a culture of competition and not accepting losing but the ship was tilted in a certain direction. Ext year could be very different.
