Colorado was an up and down team while they were drafting MacKinnon and their big pieces. Consistency is certainly not linear when it comes to year to year performance. And they move big name players all the time to keep things from locking up. Recency included.
If there's a model to follow it should be somewhat akin to Colorado.
That said, odds of Landing a MaKinnon are very low. But I think it's the right idea.
