They mentally pretzel themselves into believing they have still done the right thing. Sometimes if their kid dies from their stupidity, they'll even fight their guilt through the courts. They are so thoroughly deceived by the reams of misinformation they have inhaled, they can't recognize the truth even when it's in the form of their own dead children in their own arms. Yet I get mocked around here when I say misinformation is harmful to society, and the usual muppets bangle on about their right to read horse ####, and have our tax dollars fund it. Yes, people really are this stupid.
