Pelletier takes advantage of first-line opportunity with Calgary Flames

Jakob Pelletier got bumped up to Calgary's No. 1 line on Thursday and immediately took full advantage.

The 24-year-old winger assisted on Nazem Kadri's tying goal and scored the winning goal to lead the Flames to a 5-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres.

“He was one of the guys the first two periods that I felt had some energy when he was on the ice," said Flames coach Ryan Huska, who made the change early in the second period. "He was making things happen."

Flames Veteran Wants GM To Be a Trade Deadline Buyer — But Will Team Change Course?

Stanley Cup winner Nazem Kadri told The Hockey News he wanted the Calgary Flames to add trade deadline talent after franchise's surprising first half.

What the Flames should do at the NHL Trade Deadline

The Calgary Flames, a team that most pundits and predictors thought would be near fithe bottom of the NHL standings, are holding on to a playoff spot on Jan. 23 and sitting fourth in the Pacific Division. Forward Jonathan Huberdeau is having a bounce back year, and Dustin Wolf is having a rookie season to remember, posting a 16-7-2 record with a .917 save percentage.

Now that we’re past the midway point of the season, the question becomes: should the Flames stand pat, start to unload some assets, or add to their group at the trade deadline?

The Calgary Flames need to overhaul their bottom-six

I think the scoring issues wouldn’t be so big if two guys would get their scoring touch back at some point. Yegor Sharangovich and Andrei Kuzmenko have probably been the team’s two most disappointing players this season. Sharangovich has been non-existent on a night-to-night basis, disappearing when the team needs him most. Kuzmenko has been in Ryan Huska’s dog house this year as he has been in and out of the lineup. He did however break out of a scoring drought that dated all the way back to the second week of the season.
