That could happen with Andersson.

The flames may think him wanting to stay means he will accept a deal for $8 million AAV but Andersson’s number might be $9 million AAV. It comes down to if the flames want to overpay to keep him or do they only want to keep him if he’s willing to sign a “fair” contract (i.e. one that would be similar in AAV to what he would get on the open market but with an additional year).
I think the players see the circus that ensues when they answer questions authentically and have decided to just stick to the script.

He's not giving a hometown discount, because he already did. The Flames owe him a market value contract and that's what he'll demand.

The longer this goes on the more it works in his favour and his agent will be telling him that - if this goes to the 2026 deadline then I think it was handled wrong. GMCC needs to sign him to an extension this summer or trade him before the season starts IMO. That's going to be at least $8M * 8 years. I hate that contract already, and want another team to make that mistake.

So, it would be ideal if a team offers what GMCC is asking for and we deal with it this season.

I really hope the usual craziness accompanies the trade deadline and a couple teams decide they really need Ras.
