McDavid takes out Garland who did not have possession of the puck with open ice hit (and what appears to be an elbow to the face), then lays on top of him.
The play should have been blown dead right there, but instead the refs let the Oilers continue to press as they still had possession. The refs decided to put the whistles away which at first was 100% to the benefit of the Oilers.

Fans and media completely ignore this. McDavid started the whole thing. It’s baffling how they’re all yelling from the rooftops that “IF THE REFS JUST DID THEIR JOB THIS WOULDN’T HAVE HAPPENED”. Yeah, by giving McDavid a penalty, not Garland
