It would have to be something significant like way earlier UFA status so they could make more money at the start of their career. If all they change is banning contracts like you suggest then there would be less money for young players as the star players would demand max contracts to compensate. They already get earlier UFA now 7 years or 27 whichever is first. I could see the NHL bringing that down to 26.
Something will have to give, these long-term deals coupled with restrictive trade protection have gummied up the league.
Movement, more trade rumours will bring more interest to the league especially as we get more and more into the digital era.
THe NBA got more restrictive with the new CBA and its created more parity in the league, a team like OKC would never get back to the position they are in with the old CBA.
