McDavid takes out Garland who did not have possession of the puck with open ice hit (and what appears to be an elbow to the face), then lays on top of him.

The play should have been blown dead right there, but instead the refs let the Oilers continue to press as they still had possession. The refs decided to put the whistles away which at first was 100% to the benefit of the Oilers.
Yup, Mavi chooses to interfere with Garland, hold him, do pushups on him, and punch him (possibly with a butt end, can't tell for sure on the video) before Garland first starts to hold him. Then he cries about not being protected enough against the hold in spite of 3 obvious penalties against him being ignored that should have resulted in a stoppage of the play even before the hold took place. And because a penalty against an opponent wasn't called and ignoring the fact that he should have been the one with a penalty, he figures he has the right to mete out some frontier justice and crosscheck Garland right in the face without facing any consequences, because he thinks the league needs him.

I've got news for you, Connor. If you want to pick up your ball and walk away, we're OK with that.
