When you talk about how old a player IS, you are using the present tense. Which, in English, refers to
today, not July 1.
I think all of us are aware that he can't be signed until July 1. By which time he will, I suppose, be a washed-up old greybeard of 29 who will gladly settle for a 2- or 3-year contract, as opposed to a 28-year-old in the prime of his career who can demand 7 and get it. Is that your argument? Really?
