Dallas isn't a model.
There is no one team to follow, everyones rebuild took a different path. You can have a bunch of randomness happen also, like we are seeing with us this year in a playoff spot, or you could have a team have players have bad years or injuries when they are in a contention window and fall out of the playoffs.
They key is stick to the plan and don't let a random season change your path. Contenders don't rip their team about and start rebuilding when they miss because of a bad year, and rebuilding teams shouldn't start adding when they have a year in which they are in a playoff position. Stick to the path move vets out keep adding assets and don't make any dumb now trades.
The Flames rebuild last time saw a playoff appearance and Treliving went into the 2015 draft and made a now move and we ended up picking 6th in the 16 drafts. If you believe what is out there, he had a deal to send #6 for Ben Bishop but Edwards was sailing the seas. The team makes the playoffs off the backs of a 10-game win streak in March and Treliving again goes all in with one of the worst trades ever sending 1st and 2 2nds for Hamonic. We end up missing the playoffs.
Likely why rebuilds in Canada don't work. Impatient fans and ownership with the first sign of a progress.
