When you're asking people to pay a large chunk of coin to come and attend events, that building has to be up to date with respect to comfort, amenities, technology, etc. Having a building that is 'fine', which is basically code for not fine, just isn't good enough. It's an entertainment product that is for sale, it needs to be enticing.
As for trying to compare historic, ancient buildings with 30 year old concrete blocks (which are designed as disposable) is pretty hilarious - they aren't the same thing at all.

Yes. Absolutely. That is why the new Flames arena is getting built.
But all this bogus talk about "needs" to be replaced, and how it'll spur development, and be good for the community is all hogwash. The new arena is simply a way for the owners to make more money, and for rich people to enjoy watching sports more comfortably.
The arena doesn't benefit most Calgarians/Albertans.
I just wish people would cut the crap when talking about all the community benefits of the new arena and how the old one had to come down. Templehof airport in Berlin operated for like 90 years.
