Smith, who said she attended Trump’s Saturday soirée as a guest of celebrity investor and former Conservative party leadership candidate Kevin O’Leary, described her conversations with Trump as “constructive,” but also seemed resigned that, come Jan. 20, Trump will be going ahead with tariffs, regardless of what Canadian politicians do. She said that she is “not expecting” Alberta oil to be exempted from the Trump administration’s tariffs, although she remains hopeful that the United States will want to purchase more oil from Canada for its refineries in the Midwest. “I haven’t seen any indication in any of the president’s public commentary, or even in the comments that he had with me, that he’s inclined to change his approach,” Smith said.
