Not because that's what he wanted, but to get the player signed without missing games that year.
In the end an issue of Treliving was he wasn't willing to complete a perceived "overpayment" to just get the 8 year contracts done but it wasn't because he only wanted 6 or 7 year deals.
He just valued the shorter term cap savings / flexibility over the guaranteed term of 8 years.
