On the reverse I don't see it being anything harder, Canada at the time had a lot of modifications for daytime running lights, km/h dashboards and some other minor things. A lot of cars are designed for the US market with changes required for Canadian market.
I think our issue now is that a ton of US buyers are buying them up to satisfy a very big market, where as when Canadian's were doing it more, we were not putting a dent into their market and the US economy was on rocky ground post 2008 financial crisis. I was literally buying cars from dealers for profit, paying California sales tax, import duties, GST and Canadian inspection and it was still worth it.

The process to import a car from Canada into the US is actually less smooth that importing from the US to here.
Normally I'd call shenanigans on your post, as no out of state (or country) purchaser should be subject to paying California sale tax, but for some reason, in your case, I find it completely believable that you did.
