I have brought in several cars from the US into Canada when the CAD/USD was closer to par. There was some paperwork but nothing crazy with some little patience.
On the reverse I don't see it being anything harder, Canada at the time had a lot of modifications for daytime running lights, km/h dashboards and some other minor things. A lot of cars are designed for the US market with changes required for Canadian market.
I think our issue now is that a ton of US buyers are buying them up to satisfy a very big market, where as when Canadian's were doing it more, we were not putting a dent into their market and the US economy was on rocky ground post 2008 financial crisis. I was literally buying cars from dealers for profit, paying California sales tax, import duties, GST and Canadian inspection and it was still worth it.
