It's fine to overpay for superstars, and the Jays tried to do that with Ohtani, Soto, and Burnes, the problem is in the end those guys didn't neccesarilly take "the best offer" but took "the best offer in the market they wanted to play in". For guys like Soto and Burnes, NY and Arizona were more attractive destinations.
Where teams start to get into trouble is when you overpay too many times for guys that aren't stars but are more just okay pieces.
It's why they shouldn't be afraid to overpay for Vlad...even if he's not perfect he's the best chance they have at a superstar in this orgnaization.
