$340m over 7 is a lot of money. Going into the offseason, I was thinking it would be closer to $340m over 10. If he won’t sign for $420m over 10, it just isn’t worth it. I don’t really want to be paying much more than $40m for a 35 year old Vlad. I supported backing up the Brinks truck to Vlad but he wants two Brinks trucks and I don’t think that makes any sense.
It’s likely time to burn this thing to the ground with a purpose. The window has closed on this iteration of the team. Atkins and Shapiro blew it by shifting philosophies to a god damn run prevention model mid window and wasted the opportunity to capitalize on the time we had before Bo and Guerrero’s got paid.
Now it is time to cut our losses and get out before we bury ourselves in a deep hole. A well done rebuild (kind of tough with a bottom tier GM like Atkins) should take 3-4 years…ownership is willing to spend but we need to have a new young, cost controlled foundation in place to add free agents to. Building a team around high cost free agents isn’t sustainable unless you are a team like the Yankees or Dodgers.
