It has become common over the years, but I believe the '88 Games were the first to have a central plaza with a nightly medal ceremony and other entertainment. I remember it being controversial at the time because people were mad that they were spending a lot of money on event tickets and wouldn't even be able to see the medals be presented at the event.

It was an Olympics full of firsts:
- not just white people
- snow
- deathmatches prohibited
- skates only allowed to touch ice and not audience members' necks
- all genitals covered
- no takesy backseys
- bricks with names.
