That's really cool your son is interested in getting into the hobby. It's a great excuse to learn some carpentry, electrical, general troubleshooting skills, etc. Supertrain will provide lots of ideas and inspiration I'm sure.
Also, if you haven't already been to Trains and Such near Chinook I would recommend going. Among the things they sell are second hand locomotives and rolling stock which can help on the affordability end of things, and for instance if you want to try new skills like weathering or locomotive assembly/disassembly it's lower stakes learning on less expensive kit.
