He did not lay up on the hit. Sure, he didn't 'accelerate into it', because he was already moving at plenty of speed. The check lifted him a foot off the ice, FFS - that is not what laying up on it means.

1) player was in a vulnerable position
2) hit him in the back, straight into the boards
3) got his arm/elbow up, making the primary point of contact high
4) put Heiskanen's face into the glass

This hit could serve as the training video on what constitutes hitting from behind when a player is in a vulnerable position.
