As DoubleK said, The Raven should be in great condition. You'll love it. It is unlike any other course in Phoenix and is very reminiscent of playing in North Carolina in the pine barrens. The course is heavily bunkered around the greens and has a number of risk reward holes. Have your son work on his bunker game, especially on hard and wet sand. The bunkers there are normally suited for the chunk and run game rather than the big high splash, simply because the sand is usually compacted hard and a splash isn't consistently available. A good player can chew the course up if they take what the course gives them and doesn't succumb to trying the hero shot.

Weather in January is going to be chilly in the early mornings, but by 10:00 you should be back in short sleeves. You should not run into any rain, but our weather has been on its head the past couple of years. You should enjoy it, even if it is cold for us, as we don't have the humidity like you do in Virginia and that will make it seem warmer. Enjoy!
