That’s not to say I wouldn’t assist in other ways, like calling the cops and making it known that police were coming immediately. But once a brawl breaks out it’s real tough to de-escalate without a superior show of force. I’m not banking on other strangers having my back, as evidenced by this situation.

Staying out of it is definitely the smart thing to do. A guy I used to work with was with a group at a bar and one of his group got into an altercation which led to a melee that spilled outside. According to him he wasn't doing anything but trying to difuse the situation and got his forearm and wrist slashed by someone who had a knife.
Ended up with a lengthy hospital stay, weeks of missed work and months of rehab.
Plus he had to deal with potential.criminal.charges and legal issues just for being involved.
It isn't worth it.
