There's also the holiday roster freeze to consider.
The freeze doesn't start until the 19th, but any player recalled after December 11 (today) can be sent down during the freeze. Otherwise, only players who are on an emergency recall can be sent down during the freeze.

The Flames have a full week between games during the Christmas break, so sending them down today and recalling them tomorrow, will let the Flames buy an extra week of waiver exemption for them later this month.
