Retention spots only matter if there are players you are planning on retaining on. Hard to envision who other than Rasmus the Flames would possibly retain on this year or next year. Even if they signed a player to a one year contract with the intention of trading him next year or wanted to trade Backlund next year Conroy would just have to find a team who wanted to take on the retention for part of the return package.
