Probably because they're trying to win a number of cups over the next 10 years, not just one cup this year. That's why they did the Jiricek deal; their scouts must feel he'll be better than the prospect they draft in the 20s this year.
Maybe on Rossi, they feel that he isn't the second line centre that they need over the next 10 years (They have a potential killer in Charlie Strammel, who might be bouncing back this year) and figure they can get some value for him to keep building.
Got to figure that they have a lot of irons in the fire with the amount of cap space they're sitting on for next year and how well they're doing. They are in a pretty enviable position.
