I would make this a regular thing at the 2-year mark in between Olympics, with some tweaks.

1. The four teams are the three Olympic medalists, and the previous 4-Nations Cup champion. In the event the 4-Nations cup champion wins an Olympic medal as well, the fourth-place Olympic finisher will be entered as the 4th team.

2. Winning the 4-Nations Cup means that country is the host of the next tournament in four years. It can’t just be played in Toronto or Montreal all the time.

It’s a cool idea, and if they commit to it, it could become something great.

It could become a measuring stick for the top contenders in international hockey.

As hosting is not something that is bid on, it is a prize, the players involved would naturally want to have the opportunity to play this tournament in front of their home fans.

And since it’s not a stadium scam, it could actually be an old school national honour to host the event. The best hockey players in the world descend on Stockholm or Moscow or Prague for two weeks, play four games of no holds barred #### you international hockey, and winner gets to host the next party.

Put me on the council, coach, I’m ready.

Poor showings could drastically altar a country’s plans going into the next Olympics.

It absolutely could be something.

If they let it.
