What do these teams have in common? They all suck.
What do the acquiring teams have in common? They all won the Cup.
Is there an example of a team trading away a top player for futures that worked out well for the 'selling' team?

I don't disagree they were bad trades. But outside of Stone, which of those were top players on their teams? Reinhart was close but that team had Eichel and Dahlin.
As for your question - I'd say Ottawa trading Karlsson for prospects and picks worked out. Philly trading Giroux worked for them. Patches traded by Montreal for propsect Nick Suzuki.
Plus, are we really criticizing Chicago for trading Hagel in 2022 (for a lot IMO) because Hagel won a cup.
