It is the Flames way: we end up paying at the peak, giving up a 1st for a year of Monahan, then are sitting on a giant pile of space, just when the price drops. The Flames are cursed. They have always been cursed. They will forever be cursed. It is our fate.

It's just the pains of a short sighted GM entering the last year of his contract. That "Summer of Treliving" was a shining example of what not to do as a leader. He was reacting emotionally, and had a very narrow focus.
Now, instead of having a 30 year old #1 centre producing at a .92PPG who could absolutely be our current Captain (or he could have left in free agency), we're down a 1st round pick and have a 34 year old centre producing at .62PPG.
I don't think there's any sort of curse, it was just incompetence brought on by impatience, emotions, and contractural status. The organization should never have let Brad handle that business that Summer. It should have been an extension signed before the end of the season, or an announcement of parting ways a few days after Edmonton destroyed us.
