An Albertan custom of sorts ( maybe its more of a protestant thing) is to pretend that you don't have any money or privilege. Oh well its modest house, or its just a brand new truck run of the mill really, my family had to work really hard to keep the farm, I am just barely getting by on $150,000 a year ect...

Edit: let me put that another way. my Eastern European SiL is all about lying to emphasize that she has more than she has, her shoes cost twice as much as they really. My WASPY brother is all about lying in the other direction, that his really nice stuff cost much much less than it did.
