I get many would say that at $5.25M a 50 point forward has value, and that's true if he's getting third line minutes and maybe PP2. But when your "best" forward is getting 40 points, you'll be one of the lowest scoring teams in the league.
But until they have some younger players with substantial potential ready to take his place, you may as well keep running him out there.

Worst case he maintains or loses value (can't lose much). Play him and he could regain value at current play even (reduced contract lengh). Sunk cost.
