They do wear quicker, but the reality is you might get an extra season or two out of your hakkas, realistically. The up-front difference in price favours the blizzaks even with the longevity difference. But the hakkas do perform somewhat better in basically every condition except for deep / fresh snow.
As noted I did that same calculus recently and went with the blizzaks, but if I wasn't regularly taking trips to the mountains and was more of a daily commuter, like most people, I don't think either is the most sensible option. Most of the time in Calgary we're driving on bare or nearly bare roads in somewhere between -8 and -20. There are a number of tires that make those conditions feel basically like driving on all seasons, and while they're not as good
snow tires as the WS90s, they're arguably better
winter tires for what we routinely drive on here.
