There are cautionary examples as well though. I think both Seth Jones and Ryan Johansen fit the mold of young players that were traded under the assumption that they needed a change of scenery and would pop once they moved. Turned out they were what they were. They never lived up to their contracts on new teams.
Not sure what category Cozens would fall into but there are examples of both.

Necas was available all summer, and he even got bridged by Carolina. Think teams are cautious with some of these guys.
If Cozens was to sign today, no way he gets 7.1 a year. He is likely bridged as well.
This really feels like Dion to me, Dion signed the big deal and fell off a cliff. I mean if Buffalo wants a mishmash like we got for him sure.
Kuzmenko/Rooney/Pachal/Klapka for Cozens and a prospect.
