Talent isn't enough though (see Filatov, Nikita). A player who quits is a big red flag in team sports. Obviously we all understand if there is something in your job making you miserable that it's hard to put through optimum effort. And hockey players are people just like everyone else.


Talent is no good if the player isn't committed to using it a lot. There was an article in the Athletic about why Mogilny isn't in the HHOF, and the suggestion seems to be that as talented as he was, and despite the seasons he put in, he could have done a hell of a lot more if he felt like it.


Whether those narratives are true or not, they still exist in team sports.
