Part of it is lack of talent but part of it is coaching for sure. The team plays very passive offensively.
The Flames are very structured in their own end, but are a mess on the breakout (forwards fly the zone, no outlets provided, high risk plays right inside our blue line) and seem to insist on carrying the puck through the neutral zone and beating defenders 1 on 1 to gain the offensive zone. It's shocking how many times we have a player try to rush the puck deep while their linemates are changing, have the puck turnover and create an odd man rush back the other way.

For a system that is so focused on not making a mistake when in their defensive zone coverage, they sure are lackadaisical about terrible turnovers everywhere else.

Their offensive zone system seems to be for the players to stand around waiting for the player with he puck to make something happen. Huberdeau in particular needs his other forwards to always be in motion.

It was a bad system last year with more talent, and is a bad system this year with less talent.
