Yeah, as a job it sucks, but learning that life sucks sometimes is still part of life. Its a great job for young people, its a great job for disabled people and its important for people to keep talking to other people.
Yeah. Its not hard. Yeah. You can automate it. But...should you? I dont think so.
If you're in a hurry and have a handful of items? Hit the auto checkout, otherwise? I think 'Cashier' is a good life-lesson on both sides.
One side is how to survive being degraded by jerks and on the other side...learning how to treat others with respect.

I don't. Cashier is like the bare minimum. I say good morning to the lady at my grocery store, I then tell her method of payment, and then "You too" when she tells me to have a good day. The interaction does nothing for my social skills, which are admittedly lacking.
As for her, she has to repeat the same small talk to dozens if not hundreds of people in a day? Sheer torture.
Now if you're talking about a retail experience where you need to ask for advice on a product or something, maybe that's different and has some value. But a cashier? The only people talking more than they need to or old people, and that's just irritating everyone else.
