Looking at the 5 on 5 on-ice numbers for Flames’ defencemen at NaturalStatTrick, I think the Flames’ coaches’ preference for Barrie over Bean is justifiable. Bean has played 104 minutes to Barrie’s 90. Bean and Barrie have the highest percentages of o-zone starts on the team. While Bean has a good actual goal’s ratio due to a ~9.5% team shooting percentage and a ~95% team save percentage, Barrie has a much higher expected goals for percentage, 15% higher. So, Barrie seems to be doing more with the high ground that both are getting.
