I believe that's what Maloney said - that there were offers on the table, and that they were going to take a rebuilding offer until Florida came with their offer that was 'substantially better'.
Argue rebuild or not, at the time, that Florida offer seemed over-the-top. Hindsight shows that it wasn't the case, but at the time, it was a home-run for the Flames. I know I was all aboard the rebuild, but when that trade went down, I was all aboard the win-now. Most people here wanted Huberdeau re-signed, and most people figured that it would have been the rumoured Gaudreau offer.
With the benefit of hindsight, I feel the Flames still should have taken the Florida offer, but then flipped Huberdeau right away. I can't imagine the return on a 115pt player at half his contract (2.85 million? Thereabouts?) with no trade protection. Flames could have kicked-off that rebuild really nicely. They would have held onto Monahan for another season as there was no impetus to trade him either, rather than just punting that pick (probably that pick, depending on how they finish this year).
