Harris didn't run a great campaign and Trump and his cadre were more willing to blatantly lie and cheat to win, but I don't think that's why he's President. Harris didn't lose because of inflation. Trump didn't win because of immigration. I think the long-term post-mortem on this will have nothing to do with Harris' campaign or the economy.
This is all the stories people tell themselves to justify their vote.
Americans, yet again, have shown us who they are. We should believe them. Since they stepped foot on the continent, American society has been conservative, religious, xenophobic and reactionary. Yes, the country has obviously come a long way and there are some legitimately amazing people there but conservativism is still rooted deeply in their collective DNA. As Canadians, I think we make the mistake of assuming Americans are just like us. They're not. If not for the existential threat of Nazism and then Stalinism, the USA would have likely veered much more towards authoritarianism than they have for the last 80 years.
We shouldn't be surprised when the elect a xenophobic, FYGM, protectionist, culture-warrior , wannabe dictator ######bag. It's a big part of who they are.
