Serious question though. Would you ban hitting from hockey? I say this because you don't really need hitting in hockey at all because you can separate the puck from player with your stick. Some of the best defensemen and players of all time barely hit. Physical contact via checking/tackling is not really needed in any sport aside from football where tackling is the only way to stop the other team from advancing the ball.

Now that staged fights are gone (100% agree with this) I would imagine that body checks are a far greater threat for head trauma than a random fight here and there. If you're worried about head trauma this would be higher priority than the random fight. There is no fighting allowed in football and I am pretty sure they have a much bigger CTE problem than the NHL.
Yes in my view hitting should evolve to be checking. Anything beyond what is required to retrieve the puck should not be allowed
I acknowledge that’s an extreme view and a massive change with a lot of complexity
Getting rid of fighting though? Easy.
