The course had a more emphasis on western Canadian cities but the major themes of the course were:

1)The profound effect the CPR (and other railways) had on city development. This was my favourite part of the course, it is quite clear that the cities we know today are direct result of where the railroad went. In addition to that, the companies would decide what areas of land would be "rich" or "poor".
2)Urban sprawl
3)The concept of a winter city with comparisons to other winter cities around the world (mostly Scandinavian cities).

It was great, learning Canadian history from an Australian that also happens to be Grant Mcewan's nephew. He stands at the podium and tells stories while lecturing. It was easy to zero in on the key testable concepts as well because he outright told you what to focus on.
