Guys, I might have some interesting information for you all if this is something you haven't looked into yet. I am also interested in doing some aftermarket modifications to my car. First, realize that I am not a racer. I have one speeding ticket in my life and that was 5 years ago. With the car I have now, I'm not really interested in doing performance enhancements, but I would love to do some aesthetic upgrades. So out of curiosity I contacted my insurance company and also had my sister look into this since she is an insurance agent.
I was told that there are four conditions and if you break 2 or more of them, they will not write your vehicle. Ground clearance, tire circumference, engine replacement or modifications, and there was another one she mentioned that had something to do with interior (rollover?). Can't remember the word she used but I have no plans to do interior mods so I wasn't paying attention to that part. The one exception is if you replaced the stock tires with winter tires. You are allowed to put winter tires on that effect the circumference.
But anyhow, the two things I really wanted to do were included. So if I put lowering springs on my car that would effect ground clearance, then I have to make sure any combination of wheels and tires I put on there are the same circumference as the ones on there now. So the way I look at it is that this is just another example of how the bad seeds in our society ruin it for everyone else!
I have found a few flaws with their ruling though and I haven't had a chance to contact them about it since, but even the car I have could have been purchased with a package that would have seen me buy it with different sized wheels. So if the dealer can sell it to you that way, why can't I just do it myself? I know the insurance companies are just covering their ass with rules like this, but I think they are way out of line in how they lump everyone together when it should come down to the individual.
