It’s too bad the flames are loaded with wingers and Montreal’s two bad contracts are wingers (Anderson and Gallagher). Montreal could trade one of those two to Calgary and attach the first round pick Calgary sent them. Would work out for both sides in some ways except that the flames have so many good young wingers that it’s probably not a good idea to bring in veteran wingers on bad contracts taking roster spots from guys like Honzek, Coronato, Pelletier or Klapka. What would be interesting is if the flames took on the full salary of Anderson (while getting their first round pick back) and then trade him to someone else at 50% retained. Would probably only get a 3rd round pick for him but that’s something and I think there would be a few teams interested in him at half of his current cap hit.
About ends up like this:
To Montreal:
Future considerations
To Calgary:
Calgary/Florida’s 1st round pick
3rd round pick from third team
$2.75 million in cap used up
Third team:
Josh Anderson (50% retained)
Calgary ends up getting a 1st round pick + 3rd pick for $2.75 million in unused cap space this season and next season. Montreal gets cap space to make another trade without it having to be money in=money out. Also sends a message to their line up trying to spark the team. Third team gets a middle-six power forward with a middle six cap hit who could rebound into being an impact player on another team.
