These aren't the days when Glenn Hall played 502 consecutive complete games because he was terrified that some kid might steal his spot if he ever missed a game. It was a reasonable fear when the NHL had only six teams, and some independent minor-league teams had bigger payrolls than NHL clubs. Nowadays it's pretty surprising when a kid steals a veteran's spot in mid-season.
